From Nizamabad to National Fame- The Journey of Thota Vaikuntam

 

Indian art has a distinct place in the global art landscape with the contributions of vibrant artists like Thota Vaikuntam, who has been able to create a unique reputation in this industry. He was born in Nizamabad, in the town of Burugupalli, and from the beginning, he was inclined towards creating colourful pieces of art that are evocative in nature. He was highly motivated towards portraying the culture and life of people in the state of Telangana through bold artworks with a natural touch.

Early Life

Thota Vaikuntam was interested in art from the early stages of his life, as his childhood was spent looking and understanding the theatrical traditions that included village fairs and local temple performances. He was deeply motivated by these performances, especially by the women characters, and started creating artworks that symbolised the local scenario. Slowly and steadily, his artworks gained the attention of art lovers all across the country.

Growth Story

Vaikuntam finished his higher education from a university in Hyderabad and was also educated at one of the reputed universities in Baroda, from its Faculty of Fine Arts. Here, he was mentored by artist G.S. Subramanyam, and from that, he developed the unique idea for his popular artworks. He learnt how to combine traditions and culture with contemporary art, which had a profound effect on his artworks. One of the important aspects that differentiates Thota Vaikuntam artist from the others in his generation is his portrayal of rural life.  It is his unwavering dedication towards the portrayal of rural life that has set up apart in the first place. Slowly, his painting and other artworks became recognised internationally. Renowned art gallery in Delhi and other parts of the country have an extended range of Vaikuntam artworks that are collected by art lovers.  Several art galleries in New York have also hosted his works.
