Contemporary artwork is all about portraying the literature
of the generation. It is something that symbolizes the sentiments of modern
society and its point of view towards life. There are many painters of
contemporary art currently in the world, but only a few have gained recognition
among art lovers. One among them is Sakti Burman,
who has been creating contemporary art for a long time and is one of the
renowned painters in the world. He can be called a contemporary painter,
lithographer, and sculptor. Burman's images convey a deep touch of romanticism
and fantasy. When it comes to his display of art, Europe and India seem to be
fused in his imagination. His works are so unconventional that they feel like
exotic birds and blooms sprouting from the most unlikely places. Sakti Barman painting also involves
sensuously painted women lolling about in a mythical or oneiric landscape. The
surface of his paintings is usually textured like aging frescos, and the
distinct marbling effect is the signature of his works on canvas and paper.
Sakti Burman has
gained immense recognition as a fine lithographer as well. Through his prints,
one is able to see an incredible range of tonal and textural variations. He has
illustrated many books that include a collection of Mallarme's poems. He has
also published portfolios of his lithographs. Burman was born in 1935 in
Kolkata. Burman received his education from the Government College of Arts and
Crafts, Kolkata, and also studied at École Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris.
He had his first solo exhibition in the year of 1954 in Kolkata. Currently, he
lives and works in Paris / Delhi.
Finding Inspirations
As to where Sakti acquires the
inspiration for his paintings, Sakti reveals
in his stories. It is said that once he was painting his son Nobu, with a conch
shell upon his head. The conch shell brings childhood memories in the cultural
moorings of Bengal. They kept appearing in his paintings for many years in a
very balanced manner. The sitar, which his father loved, was played by Sakti
for the Customs in Madras, perhaps when he was lonely and perhaps to earn
himself some money. This caused him much embarrassment at Madras Customs, but had been a source of revenue during his student years
in Paris. Sakti had initially come to Paris for three years but had stayed long
beyond that, and the Piccadilly Gallery
commission had given him some money, not
enough to make him affluent but sufficient to make him comfortable.
He had an exhibition in the city
where nothing sold and another at the All India Fine Arts and Craft Society
gallery in New Delhi where two of his paintings found their buyers. His father
was disappointed in him and was worried about how
Sakti was going to make a living.
To Conclude
Sakti
Burman painting are one of the most sought-after artworks of contemporary
times because they provide accurate representations of the age and cultures.
Some of the reputed art galleries in India and across the world keep a collection of Sakti Burman’s paintings. His contribution to
contemporary art and culture is commendable because he is one of the few Indian artists who has gained wisdom and recognition on a global stage and has made his nation proud. Though he
has been residing in a foreign country for more than 50 years now, he has always remembered his motherland and maintained strong
ties with India. Burman has presented his artworks in exhibitions all across
the world in some of the most reputable venues
and art galleries.
