Modern Indian Painters and Modern A.I.

Paintings have always been an inevitable part of art and expression. One cannot disassociate it from the culture and civilization of a particular region. Be it the Palaeolithic era or colonial, Indian paintings have always left a mark on the world of art. But with the modern way of creating paintings, i.e. Generative AI, people are forgetting the beauty that traditional paintings possess. Seems like the right time to reminisce.

So here is a list of some famous Modern Indian Painters, whose work is appreciated today by Indians and foreigners alike.

Raja Ravi Varma

Considered the father of Modern Indian Art, he was renowned for his oil paintings and later Oleographic prints that reached the rest of the class of people, initially limited to the affluent class only. His work was always a blend of European academic art and Indian iconography. His great works include Damayanti and swan, Swarabat, Shakuntala looking for Dushyanta, and Lord Krishna as Ambassador, to name a few.

MF Husain

The image of Madhuri Dixit on canvas appears before our eyes the moment we hear the word MF Husain. Other than that, his legendary work and its praises reached overseas with word of mouth eventually. Often referred to as “Picasso of India”, Husain’s work bears witness to a huge impact of Cubism style that he has mastered over the years.

Abanindranath Tagore

He laid the foundation of Bengal School of Art in the late 19th century from where he held the reins of modern Indian paintings. He started modernising the artwork of Mughal and Rajput styles of painting, a form of retaliation against Western forms of art. His great work is considered national Indian style as per British art institutions.

S. H. Raza

Although he lived a major part of his life amongst the French, Sayed Haider Raza has been a recipient of Padma Shri (1981), Padma Bhushan (2007), and Padma Vibhushan (2013). With the start of the current century, his art took a turn towards symbolism of Kundalini, Nagas, Mahabharat, and similar.

Conclusion

Whether it’s Raja Ravi Varma or MF Hussain painting, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has no competition as art is art, and no technology can replicate their beauty and authenticity.
